Browser Privacy Settings

Some browsers can occasionally make modifications to the privacy settings to protect users from possible insecure content. Insecure content is identified with the prefix http:// in the URL and can create mixed content on your Canvas page. Secure content is identified with the prefix https:// in the URL.

We recommend you follow any browser security policy established by the institution. It is possible you wish to use Canvas in another browser. If you’re using an affected browser, please keep in mind the possible restrictions. Below we will describe known problems in specific browsers that could block or create mixed content in Canvas.

  • Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari use HTML5 to display website content, promoting a faster, more secure browsing experience. For best performance in Instructure products, content should be designed to support HTML5.
  • In browsers such as Safari, insecure content never displays in the browser. However, in Chrome and Firefox, you may be able to view insecure content. Please be aware of possible restrictions and view insecure content with caution.
  • The Safari browser does not support recording media.

Chrome Security

Google Chrome verifies that the website content you view is transmitted securely. If you visit a page in your Instructure product that is linked to insecure content, Chrome displays a Not Secure security symbol in the browser address bar [1].

To select any needed permissions for a page, you can override security restrictions by clicking the Not Secure symbol and then clicking the Site settings link [2].

Chrome multimedia permissions

Chrome has its own multimedia permissions in its browser. To use your camera and microphone within any Instructure product features, you should allow access to Instructure products through the media permissions settings in Chrome. This prompt appears just below the address bar. [1]. To allow access, click on the Allow button. [2].

Firefox Security

Firefox verifies that the content of the website you visit is transmitted securely. Depending on the particular configuration of each device, if you visit a page in your Canvas course that is linked to insecure content, Firefox could block access. [1]. You can choose to overrule the security restriction and show the content anyway, first by clicking on the padlock icon and then clicking Connection secure [2] on the dropdown menu and selecting the option Disable Protection for now.
